Clive Barber

A lot of people still don’t know much about Clive- i didn’t either but thanks to gurus like Bruce Gold i have come to know a bunch of South African icons of the early surfing era. The first time i heard or saw Clive’s name was on a poster for a Surf movie in the 60′s called ‘African Vibrations’ with this long list of surfspots from Llandudno to Buffels bay, it’s framed in the Godfrey’s house in Seal Point, i stared at it for ages…until Juliet, Ed’s wife-( another legend!) who tunes me in: it turn’s out that’s all that’s left of the movie, as the original reels were lost somewhere on their way, or in Australia you see Clive, from what i gather was in the prime of his surfing career, with a successful surfboard label, surfshop in Cape Town and movie under his belt- who wouldn’t be? but Clive strepped away from it all right there- maybe he took it as a sign when they lost the film? i’m not sure exactly how the scenario played itself out but fast forward nearly fifty years and we’re here! Clive’s in his surfboard factory in the industrial part of Jeffrey’s bay, fresh out of hospital with internal bleeding, asthma(obviously…) but perky- that’s when i saw him last about a month ago i was lurking in the bay with Bruce Gold and asked how Clive was- he broke it down but also mentioned something about a part fish, part spaceship disk thing that Clive had made- one of his last boards maybe- that everyone was scared of buying or trying it looked so weird…
So we popped around there- and i was smitten…posed for the shot with my two legends and went straight to the nearest ATM and drew pretty much the last scraps of my travel budget with RVCA and gave it to Clive- i wish i could have paid him more for it- but now i can!!because in the spirit of silly season i have decided to auction the bad boy- still unridden! how i managed not to succumb to it’s sweet looking lines and ol’ school finish is a wonder- i actually dropped it at Robby Mac’s shop in Cape Town so it wasn’t in my room anymore…
if anyone wants to get involved, or help set up something like a Help The Legends fund for all the goebat’s out there- who like most of us have dedicated our lives to the pursuit of surfing and the ocean, it’s a rough road- and ocean, there are many out there who need our help- who’s to say you wont end up a long way down the road- or sea, pretty crusty and forlorn- and there’s this Help The Legends fund that you might be eligible for- and it’s all you might have as well…think about it

Great idea ,too many of our artists ,musicians ,shapers ,surfers dedicate thier lives to thier particular genre without the luxury of pensions ,med aid and a comfy retirement to look fwd to .Lets help those that paved the way and hope that when our time arrives we may looked after with the same sort of respect and compassion

No ways Roosta, I am sure there are people out there who need help, but certainly not some arb who sits around on the beach all day, surfs when he wants, bums off all and sundry and expects everyones help at all times. These are not legends, they are bums..pure and simple! The legends in this business are the ones who work hard, surf hard and dont bum off others, to name a few, Baron, Maxie, Hughie, Hynsie, etc, etc..these people put something back into the sport..they dont just take! Fk em, they should get jobs, or they should have had jobs…right!!

Hey Brian have you met Clive Barber? Do you have personal experience with him re your comment on some arb bum or was it a generalisation? I don’t know you personally but I do know Clive! For a start Clive is 72 years old, he does get a government pension (which is totally crap) he isn’t just some arb who sits around on the beach all day blah blah blah! He is actually my uncle who didn’t think to use his brain with regards to retirement, who had some “dudes” out there abuse his talent and kindness! He has the kindest heart and would give you the shirt off his back without batting an eyelid! Roosta made a suggestion! I don’t see anyone holding a gun against your head saying you absolutely 100% have to agree! Hopefully you have made provision for your retirement and won’t need to rely on our government or friends in your retirement future!

Hectic cool board! looks like she would flow real good. As for the haters oh well thats the internet always some trolls lurking! I think the idea of a legends fund is quiet excellent and would do anything to help. let me know how I can get involved

can almost understand brainwashed slaves who scheme surfing is a competetive sport

why not help somebody with a heart of gold? clive has the kind of wisdom and compassion that is lacking in the world today. he doesn’t need much but 50 bucks would sure help him a long way. which is less than what some of us spend at restaurants. no one’s asking for huge amounts but would it hurt to know you skipped that take away and it made the world of difference to someone with a beautifull soul like clive.
and for the comment about being a lazy beach bum- pffft shame on your judgment. live laugh and love. peace out
