carnage! Jack made me do it...

The Jack Daniels monster

Mantis is one of my favourite live performers, an incredible artist and super solid friend

The big guy Kai posted these pics from our first day in Cape Town last week- he won a Friday with Jack competition with the dudes from Two Oceans vibe Radio. The deal was Jack Daniels helps organize a Friday arvo out the office and into the weekend except the only staff around were him and Debi Shab’s so the lovely Johanna, Tia and I got to pretend we have real jobs and deserve the afternoon off to be whisked up Table mountain in the cable car, fed like royalty, and offered as much Jack Daniels as we could get into us in way too many varieties and forms…What ensued was an afternoon of chaos my highlight being the arrival of the Jack Mantis band for a little interview and performance on-air. I couldn’t get enough of it- the afternoon masquerading as an over-worked, underpaid office dweller, and the Jack Daniels!

carnage! Jack made me do it...

and so, as afternoon became evening, the pictures start telling the stories for themselves for a most un-memorable afternoon with the most loveliest of people- thanks to Jack Daniels for the hangover, i am officially banned from drinking for a while tryna pull myself toward myself in an effort to survive the Winter ahead- Cyclone season has one last stab for us so we’re off to Durban- S.C.U.M South Coast Underground Movement ahoy!

looking remarkably sober here i love it...

trouble...

Thanks to Kai and Johanna for the crazy pics…

Sharing Water – A new surf film by RVCA

I have been waiting for quite some time now for the arrival of a RVCA surf film. There are such an eclectic bunch of surfers and artists on the RVCA platform, that it was always going to be a trippy and artistic affair. Led by the enigmatic Alex Knost, legendary punk surfer Matt Archbold and Pipe legends Danny Fuller and Makua Rothman, Sharing Water is guaranteed to take its viewers on a journey into the mystical lives and art of these amazing surfers. Also look out for performances by young guns such as Ford Archibold, who I rate as one of the best young free surfers in the world. No South Africans this time round, but we will be working on changing this very soon!

Squeezed that one off in no time with waves waving like that...

Surfer mag March 2011

Hey- i finally made the Surfer mag- ok, i do have a roll of toilet-paper in my hand in the pic! but Twiggy mentions me in the story- stoked- good for something i guess…

Dan's experience as a Waldorf school Art teacher made him a great role-model for Johnny

Skellums and Gabbas…

Shees hey- got a model search of note happening on the RVCA home page, so I thought I’d bring something a bit more delicate and in-line with what the brand is about…Im gona profile two of South Africa’s emerging talents behind the lense: one of Cape Town’s full-time surf photographers Anthony Fox, and part time performance artist, base jumper and parachute packing technician who developed a sharp eye from flying high behind the lense and having been apprentice to none other then Lance Slabbert- Dan Antrona…
I also have some hilarious links for you to check out the first trailer for Blue Crush 2 is out- and we’re all in there cavorting like misfits it’s gona be classic when the movie comes out in June as the cast was mostly South Africans: http://www.teen.com/exclusive-sneak-peek-blue-crush-2-trailer/#more-42420
Also I’m sure you’ve seen it- but if you haven’t, check out Warwick Wright’s latest blog it’s Laces in all his glory : http://iamwok.com/blog/caddy-year

Dan's experience as a Waldorf school Art teacher made him a great role-model for Johnny

Dan’s a classic- those who know him will know all about it- inimitable, unstoppable, incorrigible he made his choices about where he wants to be in society a long time ago… Currently spending six months of the year in Norway packing parachutes and Base jumping out and off all kindsa high things he manages to balance out the insanity spending the off-season with mullets like me lurking in Mozambique, or at home with his family in Wilderness of all places. Dan and I have started missioning to Mozambique every year for the cyclone season, and he always packs his camera snapping freely and also allowing me to use his images just as freely- which I really appreciate! So praises Dan, good on you- your O.C.B is welcome in my space forever!

Surfed out and in dire need of Siesta...

Once again epic timing all round!

Anthony Fox has a similar story- a few years ago he was a Wine- merchant and successful businessman, but after one particularly special swell at Dungeons in August two years ago where he made his debut behind the lense- on a rubber duck, nailing the shots while I pondered what the hell I was doing out there!?! That day he snapped a shot of Twiggy on his XXL wave and copped the cover of the Cape Argus- a career was launched and since then I’ve had nothing but good experiences shooting with him… Always positive and stoked he was in Mozambique with me for a week now and stayed nothing short of chipper and amped. No matter how much the onshore blew, nor how little sand was left on the point- he concentrates on the angles, nails a shot and moves on to the next one. It was inspiring to see how stoked he was to be shooting in a place as visual as Mozambique, it’s clean, bright blue water, skies, backdrops and culture had him positively frothing- these are just a few of the shots I got him to send me- we look forward to seeing a bunch of the A-grades in mags and RVCA ads soon so watch this space…

I can smell that fresh-baked Pao' now!

It doesn't take much to nail a shot in Mozam...

'nuff said...

Lastly, my dear brother Sean who resides in Mozam put together this little vid of me surfing the lead-up to that swell courtesy of Cyclone Bingiza, there some cool clips and a sound tune by none other then JOAV a Capetonian turned New Yorker who’s busy rocking out on the scene so enjoy:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nchcRjUDvcI
