Con-test…

I got roped into surfing a Southern Kwazulu Natal trial over the weekend- good fun waves, good people, beautiful day- but still that same horrible feeling after…What is it about surfing contests that leaves you so drained after just twenty minutes? i always get so much more tired in a heat so then a normal ‘freesurf’ Never mind that jaded feeling when you think you’ve done well and you end up last- and when you feel like you surfed shit- you end up winning..? either way it was good fun surfing heats back to back in the open and senior mens division… I started surfing better right at the end when i was most tired- probably because i wasn’t thinking about it so much either way big thanks to the peeps at SKZN for letting me surf- the S.A masters champs are on in July at either New Pier or Cave Rock- and the open champs in May in Cape Town so why not then..?

Standouts were as always Klee Strachan the SKZN team coach- loads of fire in his belly very apparent in his surfing- Klee is a credit to surfing on the coast, i knew him as a wee grom from the Cape his transition to manhood is marked by serious desire to succeed as a pro surfer- pity his sponsors cut his salary in half to ‘buy’ i mean sponsor another surfer- damn shame actually! in the juniors Zulu bowl-raider Simo Mkhize was on fire at his home break, as were Davey Gouws, Mickey Gomes and Byron Wigmore- big stuff’s gona come from these kids- i look forward to watching it all unfold…

The Africa Project Roadshow

The Africa Project is going on the road so check out the schedule below- In my humble opinion it’s one of the finest pieces of surf film making i have seen from South Africa. I’ve known Jason for a long time, almost as long as it took to make this film- ok not that long but it’s a good two years in the making- Morocco, Ghana, Reunion- i cant even remember all the places but enough to give you a really positive perspective of what’s been going with surfing in Africa as a whole- Fair play to you Jason, stoked to have been involved…

not the most functional choice of equipment given the conditions...
I thought it’d be a good idea to try paddle into a couple bombs on the Clive Barber a few mornings ago… We didn’t really know how solid it was until we got out there, about as solid as it gets down here- i got two bombs then snapped my leash- drove home, launched the ski and spent the rest of the day sharing waves with just two of us out there i think everyone was surfed out by 11am!
The Clive Barber did all the hard work getting in- but never got me out...

one proud little Zulu Simo...
It’s been a long, hot Summer here on the South coast of Kwazulu Natal- plenty time raiding bowls with the Zulus at Umzumbe… They’re a real inspiration and at the fore are Simo Mkhize and Lolo Ncubane: two screw-foots with a bright future- Simo placed second in the S.A Junior champs in Durban last year in the U15 division. With another year in the same division he’s looking good for a title this year-real good…

Lolo is a little older- fresh outa high school the real world is looming these days Lolo’s become a bit of a weekend warrior spending as much time in the water as is possible- his backhand is absolutely ‘poison’ as we say here on the coast- with a refreshing attitude to boot- watch this space
